This is a two-day workshop. Students will start their projects on Saturday and finish on Sunday.

Broom Making - Annie Friesen - $10

The Broom is more than a simple household tool. It holds memories, energy, and remnants of times gone by. The craft of broom making can be traced through all ancestries, all cultures, all traditions and is a symbol of humanity's relationship with Mother Earth. Learn the art of spinning sorghum bicolor, also known as broomcorn, into a Turkey Wing Whisk Broom and bring a little whimsy and reverence to your daily chores.

Cyanotype Printing - Kay Bartel - $10

In this workshop, participants will learn the cyanotype print-making method that dates back to 1842. Create a design using found leaves, flowers, grasses and let the sun turn the it into a beautiful blue and white piece of art.

Beading - Kathryn Poorman and Deanna Dreiling - $10

Kathryn and Deanna share their mutual love of creating wearable art. Learn how to stitch beads together to make a pair of fringe earrings that highlight Bartlett Arboretum's springtime tulip tradition.

Sunday, October 4: 1-3pm

Plein Air Painting - Ward Hilgers - $10

Immerse yourself in the Arboretum as Monet and Van Gogh would have done: behind an easel with paintbrush in hand. Professor of Art, Ward Hilgers, will teach students how to bring the colors and textures of nature to life on canvas.

Botanical Printing - Jenny Brown - $70

Discover the enchanting world of eco-printing and transform an ordinary bandana into a unique, one-of-a-kind, wearable work of art with Jenny Brown from 316 Dye Studio! In this engaging workshop, participants will learn the process of how to create vibrant and stunning imprints of botanicals onto fabric that will withstand washing and wear. No prior experience is necessary for this workshop, making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned crafters. Participants will not only take home a beautifully designed bandana, but will also gain a deeper understanding of natural dyeing and the magic it has to offer. Join us for a hands-on exploration of color, creativity, and sustainability, and walk away with a wearable masterpiece that reflects your connection to nature.
